Snow Threat North Mississippi/Alabama

* The threat of a significant snow is increasing along and north of a line from Tupelo to Atlanta, Georgia. A quick moving area of low pressure will track through southern Alabama and Mississippi. This will spread Gulf moisture over some cold air already in place north of here, and the potential is there for a quick 2-5" of snow Sunday night.

* Around here, we will likely be warm enough for just rain. However, if the low tracks further south, we will need to revise our forecast.

* I hope you're having a nice weekend!

Severe Weather Update - 2PM

* Some impressive thunderstorms continue across western Mississippi. The NWS, via Instant Messaging, tells us that that nickel to quarter size hail is covering the ground in Redwood. Redwood is just north of Vicksburg. Some of these storms have caused the NWS to issue tornado warnings...We still believe our tornado threat is fairly small - most storms will be elevated, or rooted above the surface.

* A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues in effect for most of our area until 6:00 pm. Large hail is the main threat with any of the severe storms we see.

Severe Weather Possible Today

* Due to the very cold air aloft today, I've amended the forecast to include the chance of severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large hail. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked much of our area south of I-20 under a Slight risk for severe thunderstorms. Again, the main threat is large hail. The time period of most concern is from around 3:00pm-7:00pm.

* Still on pace to turn much colder tomorrow...

* Heading over to 103.3 FM to participate a bit in the ART OF GREAT SPORTS with Lindsey Hall. We'll talk recruiting and much more - all things sports. Tune in and give us a call!

Fun Pattern Unfolding...

* A large mass of rain and thunderstorms swept quickly across Mississippi and Alabama this morning. There are still some scattered showers occurring underneath a cold core low moving overhead. The reason? The air aloft is very cold, which creates some atmospheric instability. Air near the surface is warmer and more buoyant than the air above it. So that air wants to rise, and it does. Rising air leads to condensation, forming clouds. This process continues until we see those familiar areas of green and yellow on the radar - rain. These cold core lows can provide all kinds of fun when its cold enough for something other than rain. That's not the case today.

* But it could be in the near future. As we've been discussing for a few weeks, a pattern change is coming soon. It appears that change will be upon us soon. Cold air will slam into the South this weekend. Highs Saturday could stay in the 40's all day. Certainly a far cry from our warm January.

* This pattern is one that also lends itself to major storm systems. If we manage to get one of these systems to form in the right place, and have some cold air in place, things could get very interesting for our winter weather fans. Valentine's Day may be a day for romantics and snow fans alike.

Whoops

* You win some, and you lose some. The person those words are attributed to must have been in the business of forecasting weather in Mississippi and Alabama. Our forecast reflected decreasing clouds today, as a front pushed through. We believed moisture would be too limited to produce much, if any, rain. Funny how the weather didn't get our opinion, huh?

* The showers are storms are moving eastward, and will depart our area later today. Despite hearing some thunder, do not anticipate severe weather. I suppose there could be some small hail in some of the storms, due to the cold air aloft (and relatively cool/dry air near the surface as well). But, the chance of widespread severe weather is almost zero.

* I hope your work week is off to a good start. I'll post again later today with a full update...
