Soggy weather can be expected with this frontal boundary. Showers should begin late in the afternoon on Monday with the heaviest weather occurring overnight Monday into Tuesday. A few storms could become severe as some instability seems to be in place with this system. The biggest threat should be small hail and damaging winds in isolated thunderstorms. Otherwise, a few lingering showers carry into Wednesday and Thursday before drying out by the weekend.

Brrrrrrr....
* Boy, was it cold today! The official high was 44, but that occurred early in the day. Temperatures most of the afternoon were stuck in the middle 30's, with light rain falling at times.* I had a GREAT time visiting with the students of Oakland Heights Elementary today. The group was very energetic and a great time was had by all. And, hopefully, they learned a little about the weather! If you would like to schedule a visit, just shoot one of us an e-mail:

* The weekend looks cold, but mostly dry. Highs in most places will reach the upper 40's today, with lower 50's tomorrow.
* Rain and thunderstorms become likely by Monday and Tuesday...We'll also see some much warmer weather - highs in the 60's and 70's. We could see some strong or severe thunderstorms involved as well.
* COLD weather returns late next week. We have 40's in the forecast for high temps Wed, Thu, and Friday of next week, but there is some chance that we could stay in the 30's...Brrr.
* Have a wonderful weekend!

Winter Weather Advisory for North/Central Alabama...
* NWS Birmingham has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of north and central Alabama. This advisory does include Pickens County, Alabama, where some light bridge icing is not completely out of the question. Elsewhere in our area, we expect no ice or travel problems.* Temperatures tonight will fall into the middle to upper 30's -- too warm for much wintry precipitation.
* Incoming computer model guidance suggests we may deal with some strong or severe thunderstorms on late Monday or Tuesday of next week. Still too far out to really delve into specifics, but we will continue to watch that possibility.
* LONG RANGE: The weather will stay very interesting through the latter part of next week. Some computer model guidance suggests we may see an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico with cold air in place. That would suggest the possibility of some wintry weather SOMEWHERE across the South - could be MS/AL, could be TN/NC/SC. We'll also be watching that closely and will try to get more specific on that possibility this weekend and into early next week.

A Cloudy Sky
* Clouds have returned, and the temperature has fallen quite a bit since yesterday. A front is sitting along Highway 84, and we are now seeing the cold airmass that our neighbors to the north have been dealing with for the past few days. South of the front, it's still warm. As of this writing, Meridian is at 49, while Hattiesburg is sitting at 66!* Looks chilly tonight, with rain chances on the increase. The rain will not be heavy; in fact, some places could stay dry. Small rain chances continue early tomorrow, with cold temperatures continuing.

Fantastic Weather...
* For my personal preference, today was tough to beat. A nice, cold night makes sleeping even more comfortable, and the weather warmed up nicely into the afternoon. If it can't snow, it might as well be warm - and that's exactly what we've seen today.* It sure is cold up north. Many parts of the Great Lakes region and northern Plains didn't crack zero today...Brrrr!
* The new "EF scale" is now operational. This is an adjusted version of the Fujita tornado intensity scale, and will now be used to rate the damage caused by tornadoes. Read more by clicking below:

* Weather will continue to be fairly tame over the next few days....Warm and sunny tomorrow, a few showers possible Thursday, then turning cooler for Friday and Saturday. Rain returns to the forecast by late Saturday and into Sunday.
* I had a GREAT time visiting with my friends out at Northeast Elementary today! The students were great, and I was quite surprised to see they have a broadcast facility in their elementary school. I was able to do a quick weather broadcast in front of their green chromakey wall...Fun stuff!

Warmer Weather Soon...
* For those of you who enjoy warm weather, today was a glimpse of pleasant Spring days that are to come. Temperatures in most places reached the middle 50's, which was still cool. But, compared to the cold weather of the past two weeks, it felt comfortable.* Temperatures will warm even more on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs will approach or eclipse the 60 degree mark today, and middle 60's are likely tomorrow! All in all, not bad for an early February afternoon.
* Don't get used to the warm temps...Cold weather returns by late-week. There are indications that we could see a band of snow and ice along I-40 by Wed. night/Thursday, so if you have travel plans to Little Rock, Memphis or Nashville, be sure to keep an eye on the weather.
