Been A While Since We Talked...

* Forgive me for not posting recently. Things have been fairly busy, and there just hasn't been much to talk about in the world of weather.

* Good Night Irene! Watching the tropics closely - Tropical Depression 9 formed today, and will likely become Tropical Storm Irene in the next 24 hours. The computer model guidance tends towards a gradual intensification, and Irene could become a hurricane in the next few days. The future track of Irene will likely carry it west or northwest, in the general direction of the East Coast of the U.S. Much too early to get specific on a track forecast, but we'll simply just have to keep an eye peeled towards the tropics.

* Above average rain chances will continue through the next few days, including the weekend. We don't expect an all-day rain, but a few periods of rain do appear like a good bet in some places.

* Happy (early) Birthday to former Congressman Sonny Montgomery! His birthday is Friday, and he will be 85 years young. Congressman Montgomery has been a true ally of this area for decades now, and we certainly appreciate him and his contributions to our community.

Sunday Night Thoughts

Well this weekend featured rain and cooler temperatures as we wrapped up a rather wet month that included all of the rain from Dennis and afternoon thunderstorms. This week appears to be wet as well as a pesky weak upper level low combined with outflow boundaries from previous thunderstorms will set the stage for showers and thunderstorms Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As a result from the clouds and storms, our temperatures will stay slightly below normal- topping out in the upper 80s the first part of the week.

We continue to stress that safety needs to be taken on wet roads. We've had a lot of wrecks as of lately due to hydroplaning. Hydroplaning occurs when ponding from heavy rains reduces friction between tires and pavement, therefore creating a slick surface when traveling at higher speeds. An extra five minutes on the roads can be a life saver!

I hope you enjoy your week and be sure to watch Charles Daniel on Good Morning Meridian and Josh Johnson on Live at 5 and Newscenter 11 and 6 and 10 for further updates!
