Wilcox County Tornado

West Alabama Drive...

* Saturday took Tara and I on a nice road trip into rural West Alabama. Back roads and barbeque are two things near to my heart, and we found both on this trip.

* From I-20, we jumped off on U.S. 11/80 in Kewanee, taking that road to Cuba. Just west of Cuba, US 80 splits from US 11, crossing over the "Rooster Bridge", which travels over the Tombigbee River. The bridge is named that because funds to build the bridge were raised partly by an auction of roosters held in Demopolis on August 15 and 15, 1919.

We ate lunch at Smokin' Jack's BBQ in Demopolis. The food was outstanding; this was my first trip to Smokin Jack's, and I was not let down.

* From there, we took U.S. Highway 80 to Alabama Hwy. 25. Turning north on Hwy. 25, we saw the flat, rural countryside of southern Hale County. County Rd. 10 took us east, connecting to Alabama Hwy. 61, just south of Newbern.

We turned north on Hwy. 61, and stopped by at the three historic church sites in Newbern (a Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist church, all from the 1800s).

We eventually meandered our way up to Greensboro, where the water tower proclaims the city as "the Catfish Capital of Alabama."


The city boasts architecture straight out of the old South, with a postcard-like Main Street area.



From Greensboro, our travels (and our stomachs) lead us to our second barbeque meal of the day: Twix N Tween in Centreville.

Before arriving in Greensboro, we darted across several roads in rural northern Hale County, running across Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, dated 1840.

The food at Twix N Tween was wonderful, the meat was tender and the sauce was tangy and delicious.

The return trip was a simple one: Alabama Hwy. 25 south to Greensboro, then Ala. Hwy. 69 back to U.S. 80 - which takes you back to Meridian.

Two barbeque dinners in one day, beautiful countryside, and great company: Saturday was a good day!

Moon Shot

* As you may have noticed, we had a lunar eclipse last night. While clouds blocked out our view of the early part of the eclipse, it was visible later. Here is a photo from a viewer, taken at 7:17 PM. Note that you can click on this image for a higher resolution version (dialup users beware, it's a large image).

Nice Weekend Trip...

Tara and I zipped up Interstate 59 on Saturday night to stay at The Cliffs Lodge in Mentone, Alabama. It's a pleasant bed and breakfast, tucked in the pines of Lookout Mountain in the northeastern corner of Alabama.

We had a wonderful trip; we even saw some snowflakes! These pictures are from nearby Desoto Falls.
