Late Night Update...

* The first round of severe weather is coming to a close. There is some chance of a second round later on. The NWS is going to cancel the tornado watch for counties north of a line from Lawrence County to Kemper County. The best course of action is for you to stay close to a good source of weather information.

* We have received numerous negative comments and e-mails tonight. Here is a sample, fresh from the comment section of the blog:

" After watching this evening "11 First Warn" I am convinced that WTOK should change the name to "11 First Bore". I can understand programming that warns of potential and/or imminent threats, but come on guys! repeating over and over is ridiculous! Haven’t you guys heard of “KISS”? keep it short and simple. Thanks for ruining what could have potentially been an enjoyable evening of entertainment."

***We received a bunch of messages like this tonight. But, I have a theory that only the negative perspectives actually leave comments or phone calls. If you liked our coverage tonight, please just leave a comment with your first name. This isn't to make us feel better - negative comments don't phase me a bit. I just want to see if people are satisfied with our efforts. Thanks***

* Regardless, we'll be watching it all night tonight. And, if more warnings are issued, rest assured we'll be here.

Thanks josh for keeping us so aware of what was going on. I dont understand why people got upset. Tonight was a potentially life threatening situation. For goodness sake we were under an actual tornado warning, not a watch a real warning. The sad thing is so many people dont even really pay attention much and dont have NOAA Radios. I didn't even here the sirens until I went outside for a minute. Keep up the good work and I appreciate that you were able to warn us along with our radio to make sure we took shelter.

Matt

I think your severe weather coverages are great. I enjoy weather a lot and I think it is interesting to watch your severe weather coverages. To me I think it is a good idea to repeat the warning several times so that the people that are in the path or are being effected by the storm will know about the alert and stay up to date with the storm. If you only say it once the person may miss it and not know what to do or where it is headed. Also I think that the weather is more important than the "Entertainment". Keep up the good work and continue to do what you are doing, I think it is great.

i think the decision is quite simple. if staying on air has the potential (which I think it does) to inform more people and save even one life then it has to be worth it.

great job.

On another note:
ask those few people who have a problem with the coverage if they would like to speak to the citizens of Jerrell, Texas if they wished they would have had more coverage...that town lost a whole generation of childeren in 1997. This wasnt some event that happened before TV...they just simply didnt get the warning to get to safety and it cost 30 people their lives.

I just returned from Okatibbee Lake about 10:35 pm. We were there for about 2 and half hours (BY THE OVERFLOW), I think I got 1 picture of lightning, I also filmed for a little while. While we were down there marble sized hail fell for about 1 min around 8:30pm (I GOT IT ON FILM) then changed over to heavy large rain drops. When the hail first fell it hit the car hard with a loud noise. Frequent very bright lightning. We also saw a actual perfect white rainbow in front of us, it was coming from the bathroom and extended into the woods, we could have walked and stood under it,(I filmed it but it didn't come in good). Then About 5 mins after a tornado warning was issued for Lauderdale,it got silent and calm then We heard loud roaring noise way back in the woods( TO THE SOUTH OF THE OVERFLOW), this didnt sound like thunder, It was a constant roaring noise in the distance like there were hard winds blowing and there were frequent lightning around the area we heard the noise (ALSO FILMED THAT TOO BUT DIDNT TURN OUT GOOD) and heard a siren going off for about I think 5 minutes. Towards the end of the time we were there we moved towards the entrance of the Dam, close to the main office. While were standing on the Dam,then some of my moms hair stood straight up and my some of my sisters hair stood straight up too and we felt a strong current or charge, matter of fact my sisters hair was waving side to side slightly then stick straight up, like the current was moving or changing intensity. We ran to the vechile scared and was not sure when a bolt of lightning was going to come out. We drove a little ways from the spot and I ran back to get my camera which was taking a picture at the time and I got back to the car, I got in and we drove off, but I had a strong current feeling in me as we were driving off, I had a upset stomach and it felt like I was running high fever......That was all the big parts that happened while we were there, I didnt see any damage either from any of the storms that moved through, but saw some people fishing while there was bad lightning.....My sister has almost been struck twice, one at Okatibbee and one at her friends house long time ago, they were out playing when her long hair stood staight up and they ran inside and right when they got inside a blinding flash of lightning struck and there was a loud noise they said. Then she was struck slightly in the shower, she got out and screamed, my mom ran to see if she ok, she was. My mom said there was a blinding flash of light that went through the house, all together it burned a little of the wall and the switch but the light that was controlled by the switch that got struck stayed on the whole time, destroyed a lot of stuff that was plugged in and destroyed a wireless D-Link system. The lightning must have traveled through the air with the wireless D-Link because one of the computers D-link connection had locked up which meant something powerful went through the air into the computer from the D-Link system and locked it and this computer only had a little thing to receive the signal, so something came through the air. I have the burned switch and cover that was on the wall, it has a burned black chalk stuff on it, at the time it smelled like gun powder...Also as for the weather yesterday, my weather station got 0.83 inches, winds to 10mph, and the lowest pressure was 996 mb at 6:14pm.

Josh;
Some would complain too much coverage. Others would complain not enough.

But I would always error on the side of constant updating. That will always help to save property and lives. Years of experience has taught me that.

Good job guys !

It's like Monday morning quarterback...had there been serious injuries and damage near the complaint home, then he would be thanking you instead of complaining.

Thank you for the coverage. Obviously your complaintant has never had to live through really severe weather. I worked at a hospital during the time of the South Jackson tornados in the '60's. When you have to help someone who comes in looking for their child and the child is in the morgue mangles beyond identification, you never think there is "too much" coverage. Next time it might be complaintant's home that under the gun.

Looks like more weather is on the way. And mississippi state baseball will be airing on WMOX at that time. So some state fans might get mad. LOL

Forget that guy. He just doesn't believe it until it's too late. You guys keep coming on there and letting the people know what's going on. Many people don't have cable or the internet, and you guys are their only source of weather info. To be honest, I wish you would come on more often.

It is someone like Kiyote that also thinks "no matter how many times you get the forecast wrong, you will still keep your job." Well Josh and DK were getting this right by letting YOU know what is happening where and when and what the dangers were. I'm sorry your little house on the prarie was interrupted, but at least you are still alive...Because your little house on the prarie could have been destroyed by a tornado....LATE
