Dennis Rapidly Intensifying

* Hurricane Dennis is rapidly intensifying at this time. The pressure has dropped 20 mb in the last 4 hours which has increased its windspeed to 115 mph, or a Category 3 hurricane. For a reference, Dennis was at 938 mb before landfall in Cuba and we are currently sitting at 947 mb. We are continuing to watch Dennis very closely and will provide updates both on the blog and on Newscenter 11 at 6pm and 10pm.

My parents still live in Meridian so I warned them about this and I'm keeping touch with them.

I live in Hattiesburg, so I'm getting more and more concerned. Do you think it'll be just as bad in HBG as MEI?

The threat from Dennis is widespread, including both HBG and MEI and the rest of East Mississippi and West Alabama.

The farther west it tracks the worse it will be for us.

Wonderful.

I hear they're upgrading the forecast to point to a category 4 landfall.

Yep! NHC is saying CAT 4 at landfall and Cat 1 just east of meridian

my son is travelling to Houston, TX tomorrow from Meridian. Should he and his family take the northern route (across I-20 to Monroe, south on US 165 to Lake Charles and I 110) to Houston. Would this be better that the I-59 to I-10 (southern version). I think he needs to stay out of the southern region. Also, when would they turn I-59 northbound tommorow?
thanks

Definitely the northern route. I do anticipate that most areas in this region will see tropical storm force winds or greater, but the northern route allows more time to get out of harms way safely. I have not heard anything about turning I-59 Northbound only.
